This is a part-time course for teachers seeking to further develop their pedagogical skills and knowledge. Students gain an in-depth understanding of teaching and learning within the context of today’s schools and other educational establishments.
The course is taught mostly on weekday evenings with the occasional Saturday session. You will explore education theories and cutting-edge research, and discuss how these can influence your teaching and the learning of your pupils. You will also develop your own research interests and expertise, building a strong foundation for your future career prospects.
This course is flexible, so depending on where you are in your career, the modules that you take will reflect that. This course is suitable fro those who are qualified professional practitioners in education.
You will leave the course with the skills to analyse your own teaching practice and to use the latest research to provide your pupils with a varied way of learning. You will be equipped to offer creative ways of accessing work, thus ensuring they have the best possible education.
The MA in Educational Practice is awarded upon the successful completion of 180 credits taught at Master's level. If you have a PGCE, subject to approval by the University, the course will allow you to transfer up to 60 credits which you already have earned towards this postgraduate course. This may shorten the length of study. If you qualified through the undergraduate route or you have QTS, you will need to take 3 additional modules or, alternatively, you can opt to study one of our Postgraduate Certificate courses to gain the 60 credits that those with a PGCE would normally have, which would also provide you with an emerging area of specialism in education.
Throughout this course you will develop your pedagogical knowledge and understanding of teaching. You will learn how to critique information and advice, as well as examine how research can play a part in your practice.
You will undertake a compulsory research module ‘Understanding Practitioner Research’ designed to develop your understanding of teacher practitioner research approaches and its methods. The compulsory research module will also provide you with the knowledge and skillset to excel in your final module, a practice-based research project.
You will also have the opportunity to study practice-focused modules from our array of MA programmes available at the School of Education. This includes selected modules from the MA Early Childhood Studies, MA Inclusive Education:SEN and Disability and MA Leadership and Management.
The final module, the ‘Practice-Based Research Project’ requires you to plan and independently undertake a practitioner research project, to develop a critical understanding of and enable change in educational practice in your own practice context. This process is supported by a project supervisor.
Classes are generally scheduled for study in the evenings or occasionally at weekends. We endeavour to provide choice for students but inevitably, your choices may be limited by when your personal schedule permits you to attend university. If you are very keen to study a particular module, please check with us first to ensure that it will be running at a time you can attend the class.

This module is intended to provide an opportunity for students to study in a specific area of Education, relevant to their MA, if no appropriate taught modules are available. This can be taken in the Autumn, Spring or Summer. Please note that this module can only be taken in consultation with the Programme Convener.
Early Exit Awards
Postgraduate Certificate in Educational Practice (exit award) will be awarded to a participant who leaves the programme having gained a minimum of 60 credits from the optional modules above.
Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Practice (exit award) will be awarded to a participant who leaves the programme having gained a minimum of 120 credits from the optional modules above.
